Notes:
1 Results of squamous better than adenocarcinoma. No adjuvant therapy shown to be of benefit. 10 to 15% will develop second primary.
2 No difference in survival between cell types. Adjuvant therapy reduces local recurrence , but has no effect on long term survival. Most relapses due to systemic metastasis.
3 Completely resected T3N1 better than N2 disease 30-40 % verses 10-40 %. No difference in survival between cell types. Induction therapy resulting in no tumour being found in surgical specimen probably have better prognosis.
4 Concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy prolongs median survival by months in good performance patients, though usually aimed at palliating symptoms.
5 All therapies palliative. If no symptoms no therapy acceptable.
1 Extensive disease <5 % 5 year survival. Median survival 8-12 months.
2 Limited disease <20 % 5 year survival. Median survival 12-15 months.
3 Very limited disease ~25 % 5 year survival. Includes unusual patients with resected stage 1.
