Ulcer in a hiatus hernia

Hiatus hernia - where a part of the stomach has herniated into the thoracic cavity - is a quite usual and innocent finding. Sometimes an ulcer is situated in the hiatus hernia. Seldom an ulcer in this location bleeds. Use of NSAIDīs is a risk factor for this disease. These patients often need treatment with ulcer medicines for a long time, in order to keep the ulcer healed. If a Helicobacter pylori-infection is found, that should probably be treated.

These ulcers were probably very seldom seen before the endoscopic era.
